#026 — Honest balances |

New on web & mobile
Cash means cash.
Hi there — this one is about a single word. When Orbiq says “cash”, it should mean the money in your accounts today. Here's what we changed so it does.

|
|
|
01 · Cash on Hand
A balance, not a running total
A balance is where an account started plus everything since. Orbiq always knew the “everything since” — but if it never learned where an account started, every “cash” figure was really just the money that had moved since your first import.
So now you don't have to remember. On any account, type in what your bank says today, and Orbiq works the starting balance out from what it has already imported — on the web, iPhone and Android. On the web and iPhone, an import now ends by asking for it. Bank accounts you link fill it in on their own.
Until an account has one, the balance tiles stay blank and say why, instead of printing a number built on a zero you never entered. Tap Cash on Hand to see it account by account, including the exchange rate used for anything held in another currency. We also retired the Accumulated Cash tile: it added up every month you'd ever tracked, and no label could stop it reading like a bank balance.

02 · Fixed
Two quiet errors, out of your balances
A card hold isn't a charge yet. Your bank marks a purchase as pending until the merchant settles it. We received that flag from linked accounts and then threw it away, so a card could read a little high until the purchase posted. Pending purchases now stay out of your balances until they settle.
An exchange rate rounded like money. Converting an account's balance, we rounded the rate to two decimal places. Dollar-to-dollar rates barely notice that. A rupee rate does: 0.0149 became 0.01, and a rupee account read a third low in Cash on Hand and everything built on it — on a day the rate sat above 0.015, it rounded up and read high instead. Rates keep their full precision now.

03 · Your dashboard
As many tiles as you actually read
The row of figures across the top of your dashboard used to be exactly five tiles, so wanting Savings Rate meant giving up something else. Now it's yours to size: open Edit layout, add a tile, or remove the ones you never look at — anywhere from one to ten. Rearrange it on your phone and your laptop shows the same thing.
Charts got a comparison, too: on the web, split a chart by two tags — two trips, two projects — and see them side by side instead of one line that blends them. Save it, and it opens as a comparison on your phone.

04 · Less busywork
Stop pressing “Re-run Rules”
If you'd learned to press Re-run Rules after every import, that's because the import categorized rows before they were fully cleaned up. It now finishes the job itself, so the rows your rules can sort arrive sorted.
And a few smaller ones: search your transactions by amount — type the figure off a statement and it finds the row whether money went out or came in, including the number printed on a foreign-currency statement. The transaction list opens on your whole history instead of the last 30 days. And a recurring bill can be in its own currency, not only your home one.
|
|
Also in this release
Your import history now shows rows a rule deleted after they came in, so a transaction that's “missing” can be traced instead of guessed at; spreadsheets whose amounts carry ₹, Rs., € or £ import instead of failing; if you'd rather see a refund in the month of the purchase it reverses, there's a setting for that on the web — off unless you turn it on; the notice that explains that choice on your budgets can be dismissed; on your phone, refreshing a linked bank now says what it pulled in, and the import options sit behind one row; and the web app no longer holds onto an old version after an update.
